2,000 California physicians are told they will be non-renewed and 4,000 are told their malpractice premiums will increase by 380%
1976
A group of doctors and political leaders form The Doctors Company, a medical malpractice insurance company owned by the doctors it insures.
1980
After years in the medical management and insurance business, Sherwin Rosenthal joins The Doctors Company as Vice President of Sales.
1982
California enacts legislation allowing selective contracting for Medicaid and private insurance. This type of legislation is mimicked throughout the country spurring the growth of PPOs.
1988
Sherwin Rosenthal starts The Doctors Insurance Agency, specializing in providing medical malpractice insurance to private practice physicians.
1990
Managed care starts to take off in response to skyrocketing health insurance costs. National HMO enrollment is 19.1 million, PPO enrollment is 33.3 million.
1992
The Doctors Insurance Agency opens in Orange County to service Orange County, San Diego and the Inland Empire.
1995
The Doctors Insurance Agency creates its own internal education requirements so its representatives will have a clear understanding of the medical deliver system.
Managed Care takes hold and changes the business of medicine. An understanding of medical alphabet soup (IPA, HMO, MSO, PHO, etc.) is necessary.
1996
HIPAA is enacted which creates new liabilities for physicians and medical groups.
1997
In response to the changing healthcare landscape, The Doctors Insurance Agency becomes a full service agency, offering virtually any form of insurance coverage a physician's practice might need.
1998
The Doctors Insurance Agency makes Laguna Hills its headquarters and centralizes all servicing operations. Response times to clients are cut dramatically.
2000
HMO enrollment decreases for the first time since managed care takes hold. HMO enrollment is at 80.9 million and PPO enrollment is at 89 million.
2004
Insureds and doctors want more control so HMO enrollments continue to drop. HMO enrollment is at 69.8 million and PPO enrollment increases to 109 million.
2005
RGI determines the top 5 most important aspects of customer service valued by consumers. The are used as the basis for RGI's Client Bill of Rights.
2006
RGI Insurance Services begins work on 4 critical services: Exposure Evaluation and Cost Control programs for medical malpractice, workers compensation and group benefits.
RGI Insurance Services launches its Client Advisory Network and Experts Roundtable to create better flow of information between the agency, its clients, and industry experts.
2007
RGI Insurance Services rolls out its Platinum Services Memberships that includes access to all its new
programs.
2009
RGI Insurance Services opens field office in Phoenix, Arizona.
