According to the California Geological Survey there is a 99.7% chance of a magnitude

6.7 or greater earthquake hitting California within the next 30 years (by comparison, the Loma Prieta earthquake that hit San Francisco in 1989 was a 6.9 and the Northridge earthquake that rocked Los Angeles in 1994 was a 6.7). The damage caused by such an event would not be covered by your property insurance.
