Flood damage can cause significant loss but is not typically covered by property policies. Exposures include: 

• Overflowing rivers
• Hurricanes 
• Heavy rains (especially in areas damaged by recent wildfire)
• New development that affects water runoff in surrounding areas 
• Dam or levee failures

Additionally, it is important to note that 25% of flood damage occurs in areas that are considered to be low to moderate risk. Damage from these types of events is not covered by your property insurance. Flood insurance is necessary.
